2021 - Bwawani Primary School
This year, Prismatic donated outside our usual lanes. In our travels this year, we had the opportunity to visit Bwawani Primary School in Karatu, Tanzania. The challenges the Tanzanian public school system faces are many. There, class size limits are essentially how many you can fit into the space. Need a building? Ask the parents to donate. School supplies are almost nonexistent, unless you count on creative teachers to reuse rice sacks and plastic bottles. Yet, they still manage to have a 77% literacy rate (and most are bilingual). Prismatic was honored to be able to help support their heroic work.
2020 - Donors Choose
What a long strange trip it’s been. This year, we gave to Donors Choose. We sponsored projects in three classrooms at one elementary school and one high school classroom in Volusia County, Florida. All three elementary projects provided alternative types of seating for in-classroom Zen Zones and Calm Corners. As one of the teachers put it, “Students…need a place in their environment that affords them the opportunity to decompress and return to an emotional state conducive to learning.” Here’s to a little more Zen in everyone’s life.
2019 - Sulphur Springs K-8 in Tampa
This year, we gave a check to Sulphur Springs K-8 in Tampa. I've known one of their leaders, Jenny Hunkins, for a long time, and know she and the admin team will put the money to good use in supporting student growth and success. Onward and upward into 2020, Sulphur Springs!
2018 - Donors Choose
For 2018, we funded several projects in Donors Choose. Our favorite was funding a low-income middle school in Chicago so they could bring the Broadway musical Lion King to life. Who says the arts don’t promote reading??
2017 - North Mecklenburg High School's Debate & Speech Team
We believe that amazing things can be done on a small, local level. For 2017, we donated to the North Mecklenburg High School’s Debate & Speech Team. The students travel to different tournaments around North Carolina and in neighboring states. Their passion and commitment is inspiring and you can check out their schedule to see if they’re going to be competing at a school near you! We highly recommend volunteering as a judge. We love seeing students have access to awesome programs and it’s an honor to support them.
2016 - Braggs Public Schools
For 2016, we decided to give back to a school district with which we worked a few years ago, Braggs Public Schools. A small district, Braggs serves rural, primarily low-income Oklahoma students. Our donation was used to purchase Chromebooks for student use. We love the idea of expanding their digital windows on the world!
2015 - Hickory Public Schools
For 2015, we donated to the Hickory Education Foundation. They are a relative newcomer as far as education foundations for school districts go, but we know Hickory Public Schools well and wanted to help support their good work.
2015 - Donors Choose
And then, because we just can’t help ourselves, we also gave to four classrooms via Donors Choose. We helped buy seat sacks in North Carolina, math tools in Wisconsin, an i-pod Touch in Wisconsin, and cool buzzer systems in Oklahoma. Giving back always feels great!
2014 - Donors Choose
For 2014, we again went with DonorsChoose.org. We love their work and especially helping classrooms directly. This year, we donated to three classrooms, all in high poverty areas of Oklahoma. We helped purchase scooters and giant bounce-on balls in one school, five laptops for classroom research in another, and beanbag chairs and books to outfit a 4th grade reading area in another.
2013 - DONORS CHOOSE
For 2013, we went with DonorsChoose.org. The first was “Second Grade Remade!” with support of the purchase of reading skills activity packs. Second was “Hear Me Read” with support for the purchase of audio recording equipment for struggling readers.
2012 -Snuggle with a Book
For 2012, we selected the Snuggle with a Book, a non-profit organization cultivating a love for reading in young children through active enrichment that promotes lasting change. Snuggle with a Book is dedicated to the support of parents and teachers.
2011 - Literacy Council of Buncombe
We selected the Literacy Council of Buncombe County, a non-profit organization accredited by ProLiteracy America and serving the community since 1987, providing individualized tutoring to over 300 students in North Carolina.
2010 - Bright Blessings
We presented a check to Burke County Literacy Council (NC), which provides literacy to residents in the area. The Literacy Council recruits and trains volunteer tutors and provides both books and a place to study.
2009 - Burke County Literacy Council
We presented a check to Burke County Literacy Council (NC), which provides literacy to residents in the area. The Literacy Council recruits and trains volunteer tutors and provides both books and a place to study.
2008 - Read Seed
In 2008, we were honored to present a check to Read Seed, a North Carolina organization. Read Seed provides books to children in public housing communities who might not otherwise have any.
